After moving a joomla site to another host you may get this error
Error 500 -- Layout "default" not found

This happened to us because not all the files where moved across successfully. we recopied everything and it now worked.

Another  thing you could check:  If moving from a windows machine- you should check case sensitive files as linux is a case sensitive OS - so "Administrator" is not the same as "administrator"
