Name Server translate a domain name (URL) into the IP address it should point to.
IP Address: Because the internet uses addresses made up of numbers to locate server / computer that serve content to the end user - it would be difficult to remember the address for your website or email pop3: for instance. amplehosting.co.za would be 41.204.197.22
It's easier to remember amplehosting.co.za and it is to remember 41.204.197.22
This is why name servers are used - it tells your browser which IP address the website you're wanting is on - all this is done without you even knowing while you surf the internet.
Each domain should have a minimum of two nameservers assigned to it (this is done at the registrar).
Name servers are used to locate the server in which your site is hosted. Our server uses 2 IP (Internet Protocol) address to identify themselves on the Internet. A domain name uses the name servers to lock it to a server, so when a user types in a domain name it is brought to the server in which the name servers belong to.
